A Successful Plastic-Free Fair Initiative | Sustainability Goal 13: Climate Action

The Plastic-Free Fair 2026 at Hulukudi Hills marked an important milestone in community-led climate action and sustainable event management. This initiative demonstrated how collective responsibility, thoughtful planning, and collaboration can significantly reduce plastic pollution while ensuring essential services for thousands of devotees.

Aligned with Sustainability Goal 13 – Climate Action, the Clean & Green Fair focused on minimizing plastic usage, conserving water, and protecting the fragile hill ecosystem during the fair.

Key Steps Taken During the Fair

1. Promotion of Plastic-Free Alternatives: Cloth bags were promoted instead of plastic covers to reduce plastic waste.

2. Centralized Water Distribution System: A centralized water distribution system was established at the main food distribution point to avoid single-use plastic and water wastage.

3. Replacement of Plastic Bottles: Plastic water bottles were replaced with reusable glass and steel alternatives at the base of the hill station.

4. Mass Awareness: Awareness was created among 30,000–40,000 devotees on plastic avoidance and cleanliness.

Achievements and Impact

• Avoided distribution of 5,000–6,000 plastic water bottles (approx. 1–1.5 tons).

• Saved more than 2,000 litres of fresh drinking water.

• Prevented over 1,000 plastic covers from reaching the top of the hill.

• Avoided more than 50 kg of plastic bottle waste reaching the hilltop.

• Provided fresh drinking water without plastic generation.

• Inspired local youth participation, with more than 15 youths volunteering.

A Community-Driven Climate Action Model

The Clean and Green Fair at Hulukudi Hills stands as a strong example of how religious and cultural gatherings can be conducted responsibly without compromising on environmental care. By involving local youth, creating awareness among devotees, and providing sustainable alternatives, the initiative proved that plastic-free fairs are not only possible but practical and impactful.

Looking Ahead

This successful initiative sets a replicable model for future village fairs and hill festivals. With continued collaboration, community participation, and commitment to sustainability, Hulukudi Hills can remain clean, green, and plastic-free for generations to come.

Together, we showed that protecting nature is a shared responsibility — and change begins with action.
